5 Power Moves 2021

Updated: Feb 20, 2022

In this new age of #metoo and equality, we women need to be aware of how we come across. The best method to do this is by perfecting our body language, and obviously it needs to match your intellect. Especially because our body language does 80% of the talking.

There is a think line between looking powerful and arrogant so it’s important to get this right and like with all things, you become better with practice!

Here are some power poses for badass women (and men) to adopt in 2021. Practice these not only at work but even in everyday situations and watch how your confidence will skyrocket. It’s important to note that for most of these to exude the confidence and power you want, the trick is in the how you do it.

1. The classic hands on waist

You clearly don’t want to be engaging in a conversation looking like you are ready for your Instragram shot, that doesn’t exude power. If anything it shows you’re not really interested in the conversation. You can quickly turn this around by standing straight, feet apart and your fingers placed where they can be seen

Doesn’t this just give you wonder woman vibes? You can go from 0 to 100 real quick.

2. Take up space – sitting pose

As Zozibini Tunzi (Miss Universe, 2019) puts it, take up space. Think of Kings and Queens, how do they sit? They seat spreading their body all over that chair. You can cross your legs open one arm, even if you aren’t sitting on the edge of the sofa, that way you take up space. Rather than sitting there slouching – it does not show power or confidence.

3. Touching your face

Now some may say this makes you appear to be nervous, but the trick here is how you touch your face. It can greatly elevate what you are trying to achieve. So take, putting your hand on your chin.

This is something that we see a lot of powerful people doing – on Magazine covers and in interviews – it’s the thinking pose. For me when I see people do this, I immediately think ‘they must be strategizing’ and I’m waiting to hear something amazing. ‘it’s the when times are hard, I will come up with a solution’ kinda look.

4. Hands in pocket

Putting all your hands in your pocket is a defensive gesture, it makes you come across as shy and powerless however there is a way in which you can turn this into a power pose. Of course, there are many variables to this, and this look will work and ooze confidence if the rest of your body works too.

You need to have a few fingers out of the pocket.

5. Use those hands

There is a lot of literature out there that suggests this is a way of showing compassion. I keep emphasizing a lot of this is about how you do it. You don’t want to sit in front of our audience playing with your hands or creating ‘washing hand movements’ this comes across as though you are ill-prepared. Instead, use your hands to help express what you mean and what you want to say.

Being powerful certainly helps to boost your confidence. Every woman out there needs another woman to support her, I would appreciate if you can share this post with another woman. It’s all about empowering one another to reach the heights we perhaps even doubted, until now 😉
